Aluminum Nitride in Semiconductor Equipment: From Electrostatic Chucks and Heaters to Crucibles

Nov 06, 2026

In semiconductor manufacturing equipment and high-end materials processing, the value of aluminum nitride ceramic components goes far beyond high thermal conductivity — it lies in the balanced combination of several properties: electrical insulation maintained at elevated temperatures, low dielectric loss, resistance to plasma erosion, low outgassing, and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. This is precisely why aluminum nitride is used in core components such as the electrostatic chuck and the wafer AlN heater. Building on this overall performance advantage, equipment-grade AlN differs markedly from substrate-grade AlN in its formulation system: substrates prioritize maximum thermal conductivity and surface finish, whereas equipment components — while maintaining the typical commercial thermal conductivity range of 170–230 W/m·K — place greater emphasis on high-temperature insulation stability, low outgassing, and batch-to-batch consistency. The two differ significantly in sintering-aid systems and densification process routes.

In melting and materials preparation applications, the aluminum nitride crucible (commonly referred to in the industry as the AlN crucible) relies on its excellent thermal shock resistance and low reactivity toward most molten metals (aluminum, copper, magnesium, etc.) and various molten salts. It is widely used in high-purity metal melting, vacuum evaporation, powder sintering, and high-temperature reaction vessels. Its operating boundaries must be clearly understood: AlN undergoes surface oxidation at elevated temperatures in air, which limits its long-term service temperature; under high vacuum it begins to sublime and decompose when the temperature rises too high; it is suitable for higher-temperature service only under inert protective atmospheres; and it is unsuitable for strongly alkaline environments and high-temperature conditions containing water vapor. As for crystal growth, aluminum nitride crucibles are compatible with the melting and growth of many materials, but the most demanding single-crystal growth scenarios — such as growing AlN single crystals themselves, where tungsten, tantalum carbide, or hot-pressed boron nitride crucibles are the mainstream choice — are beyond the reach of AlN ceramic crucibles.

In procurement and selection, customers typically focus on core questions such as sourcing channels for aluminum nitride crucibles and the cost structure of the aluminum nitride crucible price. Quotation differences mainly stem from four dimensions. First, powder purity and oxygen content: oxygen impurities significantly degrade thermal conductivity and high-temperature service performance. Second, the densification process route: hot-pressed (HP) products offer high density and uniform properties but are limited in size and carry higher manufacturing costs; pressureless-sintered (PLS) products can be produced in large sizes but require yttrium-oxide-based sintering aids, and the grain-boundary second phase directly affects outgassing and corrosion resistance. Third, dimensions, wall thickness, and machining precision: AlN is extremely hard, and precision machining relies mainly on diamond tooling (supplemented by laser processes), with precision machining accounting for a non-trivial share of the total cost. Fourth, customization requirements: irregular geometries typically require custom aluminum nitride crucible services, with minimum order quantities and lead times varying with the degree of customization. For laboratories and production lines with steady consumption, standard in-stock specifications and replenishment cycles are likewise important evaluation criteria.

When selecting an aluminum nitride crucible supplier, it is advisable to verify three capabilities: raw-material purity and batch stability; final-product density and thermal shock resistance; and a proven track record of supply for similar operating conditions. Buyers should also request measured data matched to their actual working conditions (maximum temperature tolerance in the target atmosphere, impurity indicators, high-temperature outgassing parameters) rather than relying solely on room-temperature datasheets. The same logic applies when evaluating an aluminum nitride rod supplier: long-term accumulated expertise in material formulation and sintering processes matters far more than paper specifications in determining the actual service life of a component.
